'Tis the Season for...

FLANNEL!!!!!

We have gotten in quite a bit of flannel over the past few weeks and just in time for this colder weather. Flannel is great for a variety of projects-pjs, pillows, bean bags, quilts, and more.

I thought I would take advantage and share a quick easy way to use flannel....burp cloths! I'm going to make some of these myself, hopefully in the upcoming week or two.

How to Sew a Flannel Burp Cloth

Flannel burp cloths are a great way to protect against

those baby spit-ups since they are more absorbent than

most burp cloths found in stores today. These easy and

inexpensive cloths are a great shower gift to

Instructions

1. 1 Take 2 pieces of flannel that are the same size and put right sides together. A good size is 10 by 18 inches. If you want a particular shaped burp cloth, draw a pattern on brown paper. Cut out the pattern. Trace and cut out the pattern onto the flannel pieces.
2. 2 Add extra absorbency by cutting a strip of flannel approximately 4 by 10 inches. Center the flannel strip vertically to the wrong side of one flannel piece. Zigzag stitch to keep it in place.
3. 3 Add lace around the edges(I plan on skipping the lace, but feel free) . Pin lace around the right side of one of the flannel pieces. With right sides together, the lace sandwiched between the two, sew the two pieces of fabric together with a ½ inch seam. Omit lace for a standard burp cloth. Leave a 2 inch opening on one of the sides and turn the fabric right side out.
4. 4 Stitch the opening closed after turning fabric. Sew as close to the outside edge as you can.
5. 5 To help insure the cloth lays flat after washing, stitch again a ¼ inch seam around the cloth.

   
   

   Tips & Warnings

   • To use Rick Rack, omit the lace and finish sewing burp cloth as instructed. Use your sewing machine to sew the Rick Rack around the edge of the burp cloth.
   • If your machine does embroidery, adding a personal touch to one side of the burp cloth makes a gift even more special.
